Veteran director S.A. Chandrashekhar is ready with one more. Those who thought that he had run out of steam are wrong. He has come back with what looks like a youthful entertainer, full of energy and young talent, aimed at the young generation. The title ‘Pandhayam’ does not give away much about the movie’s nature, but one can bet on it being a good commercial mix. What we know is that the movie tells the story of a die hard Vijay fan who would go to any lengths to meet his idol.
The cast remains true to the youth mantra. Nithin Sathya, the Pazhani of Chennai 28 and the sadistic husband of Sathum Podaathay does the lead in Pandhayam. After having proven his acting abilities in roles of varied natures, the young actor is now on the lookout for his first solo hit which will give the much needed impetus to his career. Sindhu Tolani, the female lead too is in need of a hit. Her career in Tamil has always been enigmatic, she’s seen on and off and has not been able to land a big one, in spite of being fairly talented. Prakash Raj is sure to help the movie with his presence and there are quite a few others providing the back up.
All these points notwithstanding, the talking point of Pandhayam has been the special appearance that Ilaiya Thalapathi Vijay will be making, as himself. It will be just for a few scenes, but that has been enough to send the hype meter soaring. Scenes of a Vijay film being shot under the direction of Perarasu (also playing himself) were canned in the city. Meghana Naidu, too, does a cameo as herself.
The question is whether the presence of a star like Vijay will overpower the actual theme of the movie and divert the audience’s attention. But an experienced hand like S.A.Chandrashekhar will know how to handle things; his track record is the strongest point of the movie. But, his form off late has not been encouraging, especially with Sukran. Also, the music for Pandhayam that was released recently is a bit of a let down. But, let’s hope that Pandhayam leaves all that behind and races to success.
