Vaaranam Aayiram's audio CD competition results are out! The prizes were announced for those who purchased the music CD of Vaaranam Aayiram. The lucky winners were selected by a lucky draw. The two lucky winners – Sharmila and Sanjay – both from Chennai were awarded guitars by the

film's hero Suriya. This competition was announced by Music World and Landmark.

Suriya, Simran, Divya and Sameera starred in the film, which was directed by Gautham Menon. The movie was produced by Aascar Films' V. Ravichandran. Music was by Harris jayaraj.

Kamal’s opinion on ‘What makes an Indian script unique’.

The annual Screen Writer's conference, to be held this year on 13 and 14 December at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai will have Kamal Haasan attending the event as a special guest. The two day conference is being organized by the Film Writers' Association and this year will focus

on the life and works of the renowned film personality Vijay Tendulkar.

The conference will be attended by the famous names of Indian cinema including Nasreen Munni Kabir, Ashutosh Gowariker, Vinay Shukla, B R Ishara, Govind Nihalani, Dr Jabbar Patel, Amol Palekar, Imteyaz Hussain, K Hariharan, Lekh Tandon, Aatish Kapadia, Rajkumar Hirani, S M Vasanth, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anurag Kashyap, Prakash Jha, Subash Ghai, Anurag Basu, Abbas Tyrewala and Javed Akhtar.

Various topics in regard to quality of screenwriting in Indian cinema will be discussed in the two day affair, which is divided into 10 sessions. There will be presentations, interactions, and Q&A during the course of the event. The conference will also focus on the other challenges involved in screenwriting. Kamal will chair the discussion on the topic 'what makes the Indian script unique'.

Aamir's gift and Suriya's refusal

Recently in town for the promotion of his upcoming flick Gajini, Aamir also took some time to call on Suriya. During this friendly interaction, Aamir seems to have gifted Suriya a high-end laptop as a token of appreciation for lending voice for the Tamil version of the Hindi hit Taare Zameen Par directed by him.

However, Suriya, on the other hand, politely refused the gift reasoning that he took pride in his association with a movie like TZP. Now that didn't make Aamir give up on his decision though. The diplomatic Aamir seemed to have mentioned that the laptop was not a gift from his side and that he wanted to leave something from him with Suriya. Ahem!

Yuvan – Selva brawl intensifies

The rift between Yuvan and Selvaraghavan took an ugly turn recently when both parties decided to make it public. A few days ago, Yuvan went public with his decision of falling-out from Selvaraghavan. The musician – director duo were synonymous with some of the most-heard hits of the past few years. Their association has borne fruitful results

from Selva's 'Kaadal Kondein' to 'Pudupettai'.

The rift became evident when Yuvan was absent from Selvaraghavan's upcoming release 'Ayirathil Oruvan'. Yuvan mentioned that he was not officially signed up for the project, yet was expected to work. Yuvan ended up scoring for one song from the movie.

Selva, on the other hand, in a recent media interaction, has come down harshly on this. He mentioned that he is comfortable working with G V Prakash since the musician puts commitment ahead of anything – as if referring to Yuvan's style of working during their association. He was also quoted as saying that Yuvan's pending pay issues needed to be taken up with the producers and not with him.

Now we know - parting ways graciously is one thing not many are accustomed to.

A.R Rahman's Hollywood award

The 2008 Los Angeles Film Critics Association award for Best Music Score has gone to A. R. Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire. Economic crisis, Rajini’s salary plummets

The financial slowdown across the globe has finally caught up with the film industry. There were reports that many big budget films were shelved by corporate productions. The classic example of this happens to be Kamal Haasan’s Marma Yogi.

Several Bollywood actors, including Sanjay Dutt, have come forward to

reduce their pay packet keeping in mind the present scenario. The latest to join this bandwagon is the Superstar. Rajinikanth has apparently conferred with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to reduce her salary by 30 per cent for Endhiran. It is said that she has also done so. Sources say that they make get back the amount after Endhiran fetches profits after its release.

It's Rajini's birthday today! The superstar is currently camping in Hyderabad to shoot for the animation film Sultan – The Warrior. This film is directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth and produced by Ocher Studios.

Rajini's fans disappointed

The superstar's fans were gearing up to celebrate their star's birthday which falls on the 12th of December. But Rajinikanth had requested them not to celebrate his birthday as the killing of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka continues.

participate in the shooting of Sultan – The Warrior. The film is directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth. The shooting is on at the Ramoji Film City. The star is expected back in the city on December 15th. It is worth mentioning here that Rajini never stays in the city for his birthdays and prefers to spend time on his own or with his family.

Good news for Sonia Agarwal's fans

Sonia Agarwal debuted in the Tamil film industry with Kadhal Kondein in 2003 and went on to act in quite a number of films including 7G Rainbow Colony and Thiruttu Payale. The actress went into a short hibernation following her marriage to director Selvaragahvan who introduced her to Kollywood.

However, the actress in her seemed to have still remained intact and probably this could be the reason behind her role Radhika in Naanal. Naanal is a tele serial written and produced by Kushboo Sundar. This mega serial will be telecast from December 15th in Kalaignar TV.

Shriya, Vishal and Paravai Muniamma

It is known news that Vishal's next has been titled Thoranai. This film is produced by GK Productions on behalf of Vishal's brother Vikram Krishna and his wife Shreya Reddy. The good news for all Vishal's fans is that, for the first time, he is paired opposite Shriya Saran. Others in the star cast include Prakashraj, Kishore, Pandirajan, M S Baskar, Sreeman,

Santhanam, Livingston, Pyramid Natarajan, Shanmugarajan, T P Gajendran, Mayilsamy, Geetha, Aryan, Suman Shetty, and Paravai Muniamma.

This action-packed entertainer hit the floors recently with an introductory song that was shot in Karaikudi. Mani Sharma scored the music for this song and it is sung by Ranjith. A huge set was erected for this purpose, which includes a 60-feet statue of Goddess Durga and over 500 shops. Meenakshi of Karuppasamy Kuthagaitharar fame features in the introductory song along with Vishal.

Priyan will wield the camera for this venture. Editing will be done by V T Vijayan, art by Velu Prakash, stunt is by Stunt Siva, and the lyrics are penned by Snehan and Viveka.

Ajith's Asal – will it or wont?

While the media went crazy writing about Ajith's next movie with director Charan, the actor and the director remain tightlipped about the issue. The movie is said to be produced by Sivaji pictures since the company has officially acquired Ajith's call sheets recently.

While numerous news sources state that the movie is named Asal and Sameera Reddy has been roped in to play the lead, no official confirmation in this regard has been released by Ajith, Sivaji Pictures or Charan so far that does not completely rule out a possibility of such a project. Grapevine also has it that the movie is scored by Harris' music.

Karthi’s heroine dilemma

Looks like the heroine hunt for Karthi’s Payya seems to have hit the road to nowhere. After Nayan refusing to come down from her 1 crore mark, Trisha was approached. While initial reports averred that Trisha was booked for 80 lakhs, lesser than Nayan’s remuneration, news from the director’s stable state otherwise.

Industry sources, citing the director/producer’s close allies reveal that Lingusamy is resorting to his third option in the list, which is Tamanna. Incidentally, the Punjabi lass’ pay check is way lesser than that of Nayan and Trisha. Besides, she also joined the elite league recently after having been starred with Surya for Ayan. Villu resumes!

Prabhudeva is not letting his personal grievance pull down his responsibilities at the professional front. The director turned actor, who lost his eldest son to a mysterious form of cancer, a few days back is back at the sets of his upcoming project Villu with Vijay in the lead.

participated in the Villu shooting that resumed recently. The shoots were held in a private bungalow near Meenambakkam. A song sequence with Nayan and Vijay was also shot in Binni Mills, as part of the shoots.

Lawsuit against Ghajini

The posters of Ghajini pasted across the country have stirred a lot of controversies. Only recently, a Mumbaiu-based doctor alleged that she has been receiving numerous calls and SMSes after mobile number was displayed on the posters. As per the story, Aamir Khan suffers from short term memory loss and hence to remember the phone numbers he

would have tattooed the most important numbers on his body. One such number happened to be Dr. Surekha Varma's.

Now a business man, Trilochan Singh, has complained that he is also receiving several calls day in and day out. According Mr. Singh's advocate, his client is a BP patient and such calls are detrimental to his health. Moreover, Singh is not able to distinguish between personal call, business call and Ghajini calls, he says. A lawsuit has been filed seeking a compesation of Rs. 50 lakhs, he added.

Rahman's Puli – redefining deals

As it seems the Madras Maestro Rahman is redefining music right deals in Tollywood. His latest soundtrack album for the movie Puli in Telugu has been sold for an enviable sum of 2.5 crores to Sony Corporation. This is said to be a record quite unseen in the history of music deals in Tollywood. Puli stars Pavan Kalyan in the lead and is

directed by S J Surya. Puli's music is expected to be out soon.

With this deal, Sony will have exclusive access to the release and publicity of the soundtrack of the movie. This deal also includes access to a handsome profit obtained from selling caller tunes and dialer tunes supported by cellphone network providers.

Aishwarya Rai - No expectations!

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan starrer The Pink Panther is ready to hit the screens soon. The gorgeous actress disclosed to the media the reason for accepting to star in the film. According to Aishwarya, Peter Sellers, the British comedian who has starred in four of The Pink Panther films was her favorite actor.

Ash disclosed that she grew up watching The Pink Panther and the films were such a comedy and never failed to at least bring a smile on one’s face. Ash added that she knew well that the film is all about Steve Martin and The Pink Panther and does not expect to be critically acclaimed for her role in it.

Solli Therivadhillai gets underway

Solli Therivadhillai with debutants in the lead kick started today in a formal event held at the Ganesha shrine located inside the premises of the AVM Studios. The movie is produced by Suryakiran on behalf of Track and Trolly media network who also handles the story and the script.Chithiraiselvan directs the

movie and takes care of the cinematography.

The kick off ceremony witnessed attendance from some of the kingpins of the industry including Rama Narayanan, S A Chandrasekhar, S P Muthuraman, Parthiban, Y G Mahendra, Manorama and Vairamuthu. The shooting that formally started today is also planned to be held in Hyderabad, Moonar, Allapuzha, Chalakkudy, Cochin, and Rajasthan and the movie will be completed in a single schedule.

Solli Therivadhillai is scored by debutant musician Sivan who has graduated from IIT. The movie stars, among newcomers, Nasser, Y G Mahendra, Sumanshetty, Sugumari, Kaveri, Suryakiran, Bala, and Sona.

She showed no qualms in getting drenched in a tomato red sari for the thriller Silandhi, but upcoming actor Monica seems to be repenting her decision now. “I have been approached with similar roles for more than half a dozen movies after Silandhi’s release. Panchamirtham for children

Panchamirtham, the much-awaited children's film, is due to hit the screens soon. But, first things first! The film's audio launch was held at the Swarna Shakthi Theatre at the Abirami Mega Mall in Chennai. Panchamirtham is produced by Abirami Ramanathan and his wife Nallammai Ramanathan. The film,

which is an out and out children's movie, stars Nasser and Jayaram in important roles.

The audio was released by Kanimozhi, MP and received by ace lyricist Vaali. Speaking at the function, Ms. Kanimozhi said that it was Mr. Ramanathan's initiative that Chennai got its first mega Mall with a Cineplex attached.

Those who attended the function include Rama Narayanan, Kalaipuli S Dhanu, MS Viswanathan, SA Chandrasekar, Shoba Chandrasekar, and Karunas.

International pop star to sing for AR Rahman

Kylie Minogue, the international pop star, will croon for the first time for ace Indian music director AR Rahman. It may be noted that earlier Madonna was approached but she could not confirm her participation due to her ongoing divorce. Kylie Minogue has reportedly been paid Rs. 5 crores for this deal.

Vadivelu dares Captain

Making it clear that he has not left the past behind, Vadivelu kicked up dust once again in the episode of his famously bitter feud with Vijayakanth. He addressed newspersons at Hotel Green Park in the event organized by the producers of Ellam Avan Seyal to thank the media for helping the movie to pull it off at the theaters.

The crew of Shankar’s Endhiran was stationed at Chennai recently and they had canned a reasonable portion of the film with super star. Shankar had shot a few comedy scenes in and around Chennai and the unit was expected to go to Kulu Manali for their next schedule. However, the plans are changed and they have decided to go to Top Slip in the Pollachi region

where the ambience is said to be similar to that in Kulu and Manali. Shooting at top slip and the details regarding the dates of shooting has been kept under wraps.

Trisha walks over Nayan

In less than few days of Nayan having been shown the door from the Lingusamy directed Payya, Trisha bagged the project and is all set to star in the movie. It is learnt that Nayan demanded a crore for the movie and refused any negotiations whatsoever. The producers, on the other hand, were ready to shell out 75 lakhs on her pay check. This tug of

war eventually ended with the producers finding a replacement for Nayan. Last heard, Trisha lapped up the project for 80 lakhs and signed in the contract papers giving away the required dates to Tirupathy pictures.

Payya is expected to kick start soon and it would be Karthi's third venture after the long-pending Selvaraghavan directed Aayirathil Oruvan.

On how Naan Kadavul influenced Arya's decision..!

It's probably stale news that Arya is turning producer with his new venture and that his as-yet-untitled production venture will star debutants in the lead. Latest in this series is that Arya, after having been impressed with the Maestro Ilayaraja's music for Naan Kadavul, has persuaded to agree Ilayaraja score for his project.

After Bhavana it's now Trisha's turn

The closure of Bangkok airport SuvarnaBhumi had Trisha on hot waters for a few hours. The actress was in Thailand to take part in the shooting of the Telugu film King. Trisha shares the screen space with Tollywood actor Nagarjuna in this film. After completing the shooting, the team returned to the airport to fly down to Chennai but was shocked to

find the airport closed. The police requested them to leave the place immediately.

Later the team decided to take the road to Phuket Islands and from there flew down to Kuala Lumpur to reach Chennai. Trisha, while recalling her experience said that though she knew about the problem in Bangkok she did not anticipate the closure of the airport. It may be recalled that Bhavana also faced a similar situation a few days ago and got out of it safely.

Yuvan spills the beans on the split

The combination of Yuvan Shankar Raja and Selvaraghavan scorched the Kollywood screens some time back and then came the news that the duo had split and G V Prakash Kumar was roped in to do Selva’s Aayirathil Oruvan. Though Selva and Yuvan never talked about the actual reason, media was at its best giving out different shades to the issue.

However, in a recent interview to a weekly, Yuvan was quoted as mentioning about the actual reason that resulted in their split. He had stated that though they were friends, the same kind of relationship cannot be extended to work and one needs to be professional in that aspect. It was said that Selva never committed Yuvan for his films and the latter was not compensated for his work at any time. When Yuvan’s personal life was in doldrums, the music director was in need of financial assistance but Selva did not help him then.

Kushbhu's new role

The Tamil Nadu Government has formed a committee headed by the former Chief Justice of the Madras High Court AK Rajan to identify films that were released during the year 2007-08 for awards. The committee will include Kushbhu, Vagai Chandrasekar, Kumari Muthu, YG Mahendran, music director Deva and lyricist Arivumathi. The committee will

decide on the best film, director, actor and actresses among others. The awards for Television Technician College students will also be decided by this committee for the years 2006-07 and 2007-08.

This was announced in a press release by the Tamil Nadu Government yesterday (5th December).

Suriya better than Kamal - are you kidding?

Just read the column titled "Present unbeatable actor of Tamil" in Behindwoods.com. Though Suriya is undoubtedly talented, the title is wildly exaggerated when you consider legends like Kamal and Rajini are still very much active and churning out blockbusters. Suriya hasn't even scaled the heights of Vikram, let alone Kamal. While the title of the column is far-fetched, the comparison between Kamal and Suriya is off the track and the conclusion that Suriya will be more popular and versatile than Kamal is grossly premature.

I don't know what generation the writer of the column belong to, but my guess is the author wasn't even born when Kamal gave "16 Vayathinile","Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu","Aval Appadithaan" in the 70's..How about "Raja Paarvai" "Moondram Pirai" or "Salangai Oli" in the early 80's? Ok, does "Chippikul Muthu" or "Nayagan" in the mid 80's put Suriya in his place? If not, I am sure "Michael Madhana Kama Rajan" or "Indian" in the 90's will. "Virumaandi" in the 2000's still

remains.., and this is just a brief list. Well, let's give Suriya a break, shall we?. Because he hasn't even been around for one decade.

Tamil film industry is now filled with exciting new talents (Suriya very much belongs to this group) and it would be interesting to see what everyone does next. Even Karthi, his younger brother will give Suriya a run for his money. His "Paruthi Veeran" was the most remarkable debut by a Tamil actor since 1952.(I'll leave it to the readers to find out what happened in '52).Jeeva was amazing in "Kattradhu Tamil".Vikram is in a class of his own. It would make sense to compare these actors rather than commenting if they can match the likes of Sivaji or Kamal.

Its funny to read women worshipped Suriya after watching "Kaaka Kaaka"...Was he a police officer in the film or Lord Muruga?...I know the writer didn't mean it literally but by bringing Kamal into the picuture, the column was asking for it.

Rajini – Politically inclined or not?

Every man is his own master, at least we think so. But the men we perceive as the most powerful and willed are often helpless at the hand of circumstances and pressure of all kinds. Knowing what you want is one thing and being able to do it is another and that is where even the biggest celebrities become prisoners of their own fame. The classic example of this is that of the man who is considered one of the most powerful men in Asia, one whose voice is always heard and acted upon (in both good and bad ways) and one who is never far away from the public mind, whether he has a movie coming up or not – Superstar.

Why would we talk about Superstar as a prisoner of his own fame? This is not to once again talk about all those good roles that the wonderful actor in Superstar missed out on because his fans wanted him to be their hero, fighting, dancing, laughing etc. We have talked about that for some time now. But, one does not really feel a great sense of loss because even if a few memorable roles might have been missed, what we have got instead is nothing less

than memorable or enthralling, only in a different way, which we all must admit has been enjoyed by an overwhelming majority of people who have watched Superstar movies. In short, this is not about Superstar being the prisoner of his fame, this is about Rajinikanth being a prisoner of the Superstar.

Much of this might be attributed to the fact that his fans have never been able to see Rajinikanth as a distinct individual from Superstar. The blurring of liners between reel and real life is not unique only in Rajini’s case, but it does seem to have a uniquely strong intensity which has made his fans look up to him as their savior in real life too, as in films and thus their incessant demand for him to enter politics.

Anyone can enter politics, but that does not mean that a particular person must enter politics just because there are a huge number of people who expect him to do so. Politics, as it should be, is a field of service (the contemporary perception and reality is something else) where one ideally takes upon oneself the responsibility to move a nation or state and its people towards progress. It does not mean just playing the leader of the masses and enjoying the adulation. Politics is not a place where one can be just the mascot of change and sit back, it is like wearing a crown of thorns. Making a decision to enter politics requires a lot of mental preparedness because it is a field that does not allow a person who has once entered it to distance himself once he thinks he has had enough.

In politics, ‘you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain’, to borrow from The Dark Knight. Politics is also not something which can be pursued in one’s leisure. It requires more than full time attention and that would mean distancing oneself from many things that one loves most. For Rajini, it would mean saying bye to movies, something that he loves intensely which is proved by the zest with which he is showing even as he nears the universal retirement age and he looks good for many more years.

The decision to enter politics has to ultimately come from within. A wrong call on whether to enter the field and about when to do it can put even a person of Rajini’s stature in a bad position. With all the coercion and persuasion from his fans, even a calm and spiritually inclined man like Rajini may have trouble thinking freely and clearly. The decision has to be taken by all fans to trust Rajini with the final call. After all, he is his own man with ideas of a quite and peaceful life and no one has any right to tell him what to do. Good news to Ajith fans!

Director Saran, who is currently working on Modhi Vilayadu starring Vinay and Kajal Agarwal, has been signed up to direct Ajith's next. Only recently there was a buzz in Kollywood that Sivaji Productions have been scouting for a director for their next venture with Ajith. The film has been titled Asal.

Saran and Ajith had earlier worked together in films like Kadhal Mannan and Amarkalam. The lead lady for Asal is yet to be finalized and the shooting is expected to commence from February 2009 onwards.

Nayan opts out of Payya?

The recent buzz in Kollywood suggests that Nayanthara may not star in Lingusamy's Payya. The actress was reportedly paid a salary crossing over Rs. 1 crore to feature in this film opposite Karthi. AR Rahman in a state of shock

AR Rahman left Chennai abruptly leaving behind all his assignment hanging in balance. The ace music director flew to New York to spend some time there and his return date remains uncertain. Sources in Kollywood indicate that Rahman was disturbed after his long time friend and sound engineer H. Sridhar's untimely demise.

Rajini, Kamal offer condolences to Prabhu Deva

It was a sad day for actor-director Prabhu Deva's family yesterday (4th December 2008). The 13-year-old son Vishal of Prabhu Deva breathed his last during the early hours. Vishal had been suffering from cancer for quite sometime and his health started deteriorating lately.

Those who visited the family to offer

their condolences include Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Vijay, Kushbhu, Nayanthara and Prakash Raj. Vishal's body was cremated at the Besant Nagar crematorium at around 3 pm yesterday.

Internet seems to play spoilsport as far as unreleased films are concerned. The latest film that is hit by the mischief makers on the internet is Villu. Many big budget films have fallen prey to the mischief mongers who distribute the songs of the unreleased film on the internet free of cost. The three songs that have been doing the rounds recently

are: Uyirai Thozhitthen, Nee Parthidel and Kanavellam Neethane. These three songs are said to be from Villu.

December season in Kollywood

A temporary lull in the last couple of months in the industry will be replaced by barrage of movies in December 2008. Saamida, a film that is shot in Kasi, will be out on the 6th. Silambarasan's Silambattam is likely to be released on the 12th while official confirmation is awaited. 'Where is the party tonight' is on the top of charts and his fans are eagerly

awaiting this release. AVM's Aa Aaa Yi Yee with two young couple doing the central role will hit the screens on the 18th.

Besides these movies, other films that are anticipated are: Ravi Krishna and Kamalaini Mukherjee's Kaadal Naa Summa Illai, Abirami Ramanadan's Panjamirtham, Maddy's Guru En Aalu and Aindam Padai. However, Radha Mohan's Abhiyum Naanum which was expected for Diwali may also hit the marquee during this season. Perarasu's Thiruvannamalai with Arjun may throw a surprise with an early release. Bala seals Naan Kadavul

Naan Kadavul, the film that was in the making for a very long time, will finally be released for Pongal 2009. The film’s audio release is scheduled for this month end. Yesterday the crew shot a last bit of the film at the AVM Studios in Chennai which had Bharathi, Ranjani and Azhagan Thamizh Mani.

Bharathi (not to be confused with Ammuvaghiya Naan star) plays the role of Arya's mother while Azhagan Thamizh Mani is Arya's dad and Ranjani happens to be his sister. The scene was that of a small function for Ranjani on her attaining puberty. Bharathi happens to be in a melancholic mood because there are no kith and kin attending the function. When Ranjani questions her parents about the absence of her brother Arya, both the parents appear to be in a very pensive mood. This was the scene that was filmed and with this, the shooting of Naan Kadavul comes to an end. Bala's fans would be extremely delighted and would wait for this Pongal bonanza from the talented director.

Rajini considers his film to be the last

Director Lingusamy during the audio launch of his production venture Pattalam, disclosed that Rajini had mentioned once to him that ever since 1992 he has considered each of the film that he has been acting to be his final film. The director-producer said this was Rajinikanth's answer when he questioned about being in the film industry for over 25 years.

Rajini till date maintains his stylish and youngish persona in all his films, which is an attraction to the young and the old alike.

Lingusamy is producing the film Pattalam under his banner Thirupati Brothers. The film stars veteran actress Nadiya along with eight debutantes.

What happened to Ajith's film?

A couple of months ago Sivaji Productions had announced that it will produce a film with Ajith in the lead. Sameera Reddy was signed up to play his on screen pair. But, unfortunately, director Gautham Menon, who was supposed to have commenced the film in September, was tied up with Vaaranam Aayiram and Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam.

Later on he also returned the advance paid to him by Sivaji Productions. Due to this, Ajith's project was left hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, the production house is scouting for a suitable director to take up the project. Vishnuvardhan, the director of Billa, was a strong contender in the race, but his present commitment with Sarvam seems to halt the progress as he will be available only after March. Other established directors like Prabhu Deva and KS Ravi Kumar are also busy with their own projects and are not in a position to take up Ajith's venture. It now looks like that all Ajith just needs is a suitable director.

Compares Nayan with Sridevi

The forthcoming Nayanthara-Karthi starrer has the fans' expectations soaring high. The film, titled Payya, will be directed by Lingusamy. Speaking about the film and Nayanthara in particular, Lingusamy said that Payya's storyline revolves entirely on the highways of Bangalore-Mumbai route. What happens in a car forms the crux of Payya, he elaborated.

On selecting Nayan for the role, Lingusamy said that she is the best actress who has all the qualities that Sridevi had. He added that Nayan's acting skills will be showcased in Payya. The actress might even be paid a crore for it

Bharathiraja:“Corporate producers are crocodiles”

Bommalattam, Bharathiraja’s latest, had long been delayed but will finally get a release on the 12. It’s press meet was held this evening at Four Frames, Chennai, where the director vociferously spoke against corporate companies involved in producing cinema today.

The movie is based on a real story,

and he has used actual people from the locations instead of actors. The last time he did a true story was Manvasanai. It’s about three murders and a murderer who was never caught by the police. However, in the movie, he will show the murdered being caught by the police. Raja said the climax of the film is unique and no one will be able to guess it.

Bommalattam had been screened at German film festivals where it was critically appreciated. One German film institute has even included the film as a text to be studied in the course. Raja said the movie had been delayed because of corporate companies not supporting the film enough. They felt it did not have a wide market and so did not promote it. He went on to say that in the years past, distributors would fight a lot to get a market and take a great deal of trouble to make the film a success, but corporate companies don’t take much trouble.

These distributors today have become as thin and invisible as lizards, he said. But they are good people. But corporate companies are as predatory as crocodiles and will eat you up. Now because of the economic recession they are laying low, he added. And this was a good thing, and it would be good if they continued to be low key.

Nadigar Sangam takes a strong resolution

This morning (December 2), several stars and actors from the Nadigar Sangam met to offer condolences and prayers to those affected by the Mumbai tragedy. A comedy scene from Endhiran

Rajinikanth starrer Endhiran, which was progressing rapidly, was stalled last week due to the heavy rains that lashed the Chennai city. Prior to the rains, the film’s crew was seen camping in several parts of the city to film some important scenes. Incidentally, director Shankar had planned the shooting schedule very meticulously and saw to it that the

unit shifted its base every day. Sources have it that this was to avoid the fans thronging the shooting venue. It is said that even the vehicles used for the shooting were parked in inconspicuous places.

Very recently, a comedy scene, in which Rajini was seen in both the roles as a scientist and Robot, was filmed at a famous beauty parlor. As per the scene, Rajini takes the Robot for a haircut to a salon. The hairstylist takes a look at robot Racine’s long locks of hair and asks if it took six months to grow that much to which he replies that it took just one day. This scene had the crew watching it in splits of laughter.

Naan Kadavul’s release date

Finally it looks like the audio release of Naan Kadavul will be held in December. However, no date has been fixed for this event as yet. The film, ever since it started rolling, hit on a series of problems and it took nearly two years to complete. Though director Bala had completed the shooting now, no date has been fixed for the movie’s release as yet.

But the producers have now made it clear that the audio launch will be held in December at any cost. Ilayaraja has scored the music for Naan Kadavul. It is said that an old song has been included in the film, but it is still uncertain if it is a remix.

Dhanush-Rajini sentiment

Rajinikanth son-in-law and established in his own right, Dhanush, seems to have a strong penchant for the latter’s film titles. So far Dhanush has picked out two titles of Rajinikanth yesteryear blockbuster – Polladhavan and Padikadhavan (still in the making).

The latest buzz is that his next film
Dhanush

Sneha’s film in trouble

Sneha will be seen for the first time in an action flick titled Bhavani I P S, the remake of Vyjayanthi I P S which starred Vijayashanthi. The shooting of the film began in Tirunelveli a couple of weeks back. This film is being produced by Sri Movie Makers and directed by Arthi Kumar. Sneha has reportedly lost a few kilos and is said to be learning different types of stunts for the film.

Few scenes involving Vivek was shot in the Ramar Temple in Palayamkottai a few days back. That’s when few office bearers of religious outfits like the Hindu Munnani and Yadavar Maha Sabai visited the shooting spot and complained that the crew had not taken permission from the authorities to shoot at the temple. Nisha threatens Endhiran!

The Rajinikanth starrer Endhiran, which was being filmed in Chennai over the past few days, has been stalled due to heavy rains. Several parts of Tamil Nadu have been severely affected due to unrelenting rains. Owing to this, the shooting of all the films that has been progressing in Tamil Nadu had to be stopped.

Apart from Endhiran, Silambarasan’s Silambattam, Ragava Lawrence’s Rajathi Raja, Sathyaraj’s Sangamithra and a host of other films, which were being filmed in various parts of the state, have been stalled.

Ash– busy with Raavan, Endiran in dismay

The third leg of shooting of Endhiran, which was scheduled to be held in Kulu Manali was cancelled as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is busy with Mani Rathnam’s Ravan. The Endhiran team, sans Aishwarya, left for Kulu a few days ago but were not able to film the song sequence as planned because the actress was

caught up in Mani’s shooting in Kochi. The disappointed crew returned back to Chennai to can those scenes that does not require her. It is now believed that Shankar-Rajini and team will leave for Kulu when Ash completes her commitments with Mani Rathnam’s Ravan.

Seeman and Ameer back

Directors Seeman and Ameer were arrested on 24th October 2008 for delivering a speech that was detrimental to the sovereignty of India. It may be recalled that Ameer and Seeman’s speech during the protest against the killings on innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka put them in deep trouble. However, the directors were released from custody on conditional

bail on 30th October. But as per the conditions, they were not allowed to venture out of Madurai and had to present themselves at the police station in Madurai to sign everyday.

However, their travails came to an end yesterday (25th November, 2008) with the Ramanathpuram Sessions Court relaxing their conditional bail. According to the advocates of Ameer and Seeman, the court relaxed the conditions as both were established directors busy with their projects. At present Ameer is producing and acting in the film Yogi. With the bail conditions being relaxed, it looks like Ameer will travel to Chennai and recommence the work.

Sarath makes an announcement on Radhika

We have seen Radhika, the multifaceted personality, as an actress and a producer. Superstar Rajinikanth's biography, authored by Gayathri Srikanth, is ready to be released in Tamil. Gayathri's Tamil version of the book, titled Rajini Pera Ketaale, will be launched on November 30 in an event in Chennai.

Representatives of the author mention that the Tamil version will

have many interesting additions as opposed to the English version. The book will be released by Kanimozhi M P and first copy will be presented to entrepreneur Meena Reddy. Soundarya Rajinikanth and director Muthuraman are also expected to take part in the event.

Gautham & Rahman - One more!

While Harris has gone on records about his rift with Gautham Menon and announced about his split with the director, the latter remained tightlipped about the whole issue. However with the recession, things have turned a volte-face and now the industry is working towards bringing down the salary of stars to keep them going. In Bollywood, many leading stars have opted to go down on their salary. In Kollywood too it has been said that corporate film companies will be reducing their salaries to the stars and stars like Ajith and Vijay also will be reducing their remuneration. When President of Producer’s Council Rama Narayanan was approached to give his opinion on this, he said, “I am not aware of the salary policies of the corporate companies towards Tamil stars. But our council will be discussing on this in our next meeting.”

The cream of Kollywood today left for Rameshwaram to participate in the protest against the atrocities being inflicted on Tamils. The group of more than 2000 people of the film industry headed by Bharathiraja, president of the Director’s association boarded the specially chartered Rameshwaram express from the Chennai Egmore station

at 4:15 p.m. today. The train was flagged of by veteran director K.Balachander who said that this was the expression of solidarity to the suffering Tamils by people of the film industry. Most of the 2000 people who are part of this demonstration are either directors or technicians. Some of the prominent names who were spotted at the Egmore station today includes Ramanarayanan, Bhagyaraj, Editor Mohan, Cheran, Manobala, producer Dhanu, R.K. Chandran, Pandiarajan, Santhanabharathi among others.

The train is expected to reach Rameshwaram at around 6:30 a.m on Sunday morning. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the accommodation of all the participants in the protest, with around 450 rooms being booked. A small meeting will be held at around 10 a.m. after which a protest march will be taken through the town which will end at a 100 acre ground in Tillakkadu at around 2 p.m. The total expenditure of the protest has been estimated to be close to 15 lakhs. Bharathiraja said that this was one of the occasions when people in the film industry were setting aside all their differences and standing united for a common cause.

The event will however lack the presence of the big screen stars. Vadivelu is the only prominent actor who will be taking part in the protest. The artistes are expected to take part in a separate protest for the same cause on the 1st of November that will be held in the Nadigar Sangam office premises.

The procession started at 2.30 in the afternoon with the participants wearing black badges that displayed slogans supporting the cause of genocide of ethnic Tamil community in Sri Lanka. The procession was divided into four divisions and had directors and producers in the first division, actors in the second division, stunt artistes in the third division and members of the Women's wing of the South Indian movie employees' association in the fourth line.

The rally culminated into a meeting at 4.00 in the evening with speeches that voiced concern over the issue. 5,000 policemen were deployed at the site to avoid any unforeseen incidents. Also, in support for the protests and the cause noon shows of theatres in Chennai and all over Tamil Nadu were suspended.

Achamundu Achamundu, India’s first RED one feature is nearing completion and the final leg of the DI process is being carried out in Hollywood – Plaster City, LA. Achamundu is directed by the NRI director Arun Vaidyanathan and is mostly shot in the USA. Recently, in the special effect studios, noted Hollywood producers Michael Peyser and Jon Labrie called on the crew.

Earlier, the producers expressed interest to director Arun who in turn invited them over to witness the process and have a look at the movie. It is learnt that Peyser and Labrie, after watching the movie, were impressed with the outcome and congratulated Arun on the good work. Peyser was the producer of hugely successful films like Speed 2 and Labrie was associated with the Academy award winning ‘Lord of the Rings’ series.

The feedback seems to have lifted the spirits of Arun who is gearing up his efforts for the release of the movie in late 2008

The film fraternity has announced that it will hold a protest condemning the killing of the Tamils by the SL army in Sri Lanka. While it was announced by the Directors’ and Producers’ Council that they will hold the protest meet at Rameswaram on October 19th, the Nadigar Sangam President Sarathkumar expressed

The issue took a new turn with Sarath announcing that the actors and actresses will observe a fast on November 1st in Chennai. Meanwhile, Director Bharathiraja, seems to be going ahead with his plans of protest in Rameswaram. Vijay slaps Trisha in Gillie, Dhanush slaps Nayantara in Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Vikram slaps Trisha in Bheema, Simbu slaps back Reema Sen in Vallavan, Rajini slaps back Vijayashanthi in Mannan, and Bharat slaps Kushboo (playing his sister) in Pazhani. These slapping scenes come to mind right away, but there are several more instances (with other stars as well) that you must have noticed yourself. In Bheema the reason Vikram slaps the character Trisha plays is because she is so annoying. She irritates him and pesters him until he loses his temper, and slaps her. But why make her character such a pest? Why have a scene where she provokes Bheema to the point where he is forced to slap her?

The script (and the director of the film) will make it out to seem that these women are asking for it, and that the men are doing it for the good of all these wayward women ('these poor women don't know what is right and wrong, we have to show them'); another answer from the directors will be: 'the situation in the story warranted it’. But is it really

required in any situation? Why write that into the script, in the first place? The men in our movies- even heroes- routinely slap women. Heroes slap heroines, fathers slap daughters, brothers slap sisters, uncles slap nieces, husbands slap wives. And if a female character slaps a male character, she will be slapped back twice because she dared.

Just once I'd like to see a movie where a woman slaps a man and she is not slapped back. Oh wait, it actually does happen quite often –when a mother slaps her son. This age old mother-son sentiment alone is permitted. But seriously, it would be so cool if even one of our heroes insists that he does a scene where the heroine slaps him and he doesn't slap back. What pleasure is the audience supposed to derive from watching women being slapped around? The more educated in the audience might understand that it is just a movie, and that the hero is playing a character, but the masses, especially some men, might think it is the right way to treat women because the hero does so.

It's a pity that our educated heroes also don't object to this in the script. I'm all for item songs, and I enjoy a song loaded with sexuality as much as the next man. But we will earn the privilege of indulging in them only if the rest of the film treats the heroine, the item girl and the rest of the women characters with sensitivity, fairness, un-condescension, respect and love. The other day I was watching Vallavan again on DVD and was pleasantly surprised to see Simbu apologize to Reema Sen: "Whatever the provocation was, it was wrong for me- a male- to slap you" he says. This is at least a first step. And then, in an even more surprising scene, he allows Reema to slap him back twice. Earlier, he says that now famous dialogue about not threatening girls into falling for you, but wooing them through a deep friendship.

The undercurrent of violence towards women that runs through many Tamil movies is disturbing. Women as villains, women being shouted at, women being humiliated and teased through insinuating dialogue, and women as sex toys. The women in the audience patiently bear it, but I'm not sure why the heroines stand for it. I guess if they objected, they might not even get to be the heroine after that. Apart from all the slapping around that goes on, there are all those regressive patriarchal values embedded in our stories. Many Tamil movies portray brutal patriarchy masked as old fashioned values. Jyothsna Bhavanishankar, a colleague, remarks, “As a woman, it is very demeaning to watch another woman being slapped. But I am also sure that women being women will carry themselves with dignity in whatever they do.”

And why do we men need our heroes to be so macho all the time? Most of us really don't, but that's how these heroes have been conceived for the longest time, and there's nothing we can do but stomach it. Every time these heroes feel obliged to trash six guys with chains and knives, we are all put in a position where we'll have to do the same if we were ever to run into such bad weather. Ideally, I'd like to negotiate with them, and if that doesn't work… run – but since our heroes make it seem like fun to trash them all….

A six pack is a good thing (at last our women have some eye candy, too) but it doesn't- or shouldn't –signal violence. It should suggest someone who is proud of his body, who takes care of it, who likes to be fit, and wants to look as good as he can. And while we are talking of bodies, it would be nice if Tamil cinema stops being coy about intimacy (it makes a family watching a 'scene' at home on television squirm with embarrassment) and becomes more honest about sex. Let's have less innuendo, less sleaze, and more honest, hard-won emotion.

Tamil cinema is finally full of edge, freshness, surprise and cinematic promise. There's just one thing that still makes it backward: the presence –both subtle and obvious –of the kind of extreme machismo I have been describing. We can only hope that as Kollywood cinema changes, it will also make deep changes in its attitude to women, and leave behind its regressive, conservative, obnoxious politics and become a cinema that –not just us - but the world can admire

After expressing their solidarity in the Cauvery issue and later on in the Hogennakal matter, Tamil film industry is now geared up to voice their opinion on the problems faced by the Sri Lankan Tamils. Rama Narayanan, President of Tamil film Producer's Council announced that there will be a demonstration on the 19th of October at Rameswaram

and invited every member of the Tamil film fraternity to take part in this protest against the Sri Lankan government. He also said that all film shootings from 18th to 20th of October stands cancelled.

At this juncture, there was an emergency meeting convened by Sarath Kumar, President of Nadigar Sangam involving actors and actresses. It was decided at the meeting that Nadigar Sangam will wholeheartedly support the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils but they would be able to participate in this demonstration if it was held in Chennai.

Reacting to this, Rama Narayanan said that there is a special train arranged for around 1000 people, which would leave Chennai on October 18th night and reach Rameswaram on the 19th morning. After the meeting and demonstration ends on the 19th, the special train would leave Rameswaram on 19th evening and reach Chennai on the 20th.

Ayngaran International, the producer of Aegan is planning a big release for their film. Plans are afoot to release the film in about 150 theatres worldwide. According to the film's US distributors Bharat Creations, 12 prints will be screened in the US. It may be noted that Billa was screened in only six screens. Ayngaran International, which is

marketing the film in a big way, declared that the film will be released on October 24th.

Aegan stars Ajith and Nayanthara, and its music by Yuvan Shankar Raja has already proved to be a chartbuster. The film is directed by choreographer-turned-director Raju Sundaram.

Meanwhile, the Gautham Menon directed venture Vaaranam Aayiram that stars Surya is expected to be released a day prior to Aegan (October 23rd 2008). However, there are a few loose strings that need to be tied up before its release. Sources in Kollywood say that Gemini Films has procured the Tamil Nadu rights of VA from Oscar Films and have priced it really high. The distributors, for this reason, are skeptical in purchasing the film. If this issue is solved, then VA, in all probability, could be released on October 23rd.

I was in the midst of a discussion between two friends talking about Rahman and Yuvan, and this made me to think of one contrasting difference between these composers. When you look at A R Rahman’s career graph, you can’t help noticing that most of his flop movies (not flop songs) are with new directors that he makes music for

-recent example, Kala Prabhu’s Sakkarakatti. You will notice that 90 percent of his hit movies are with well established directors or are backed up by strong personalities, such as Aamir Khan for his nephew in Jaane Tu.

This is a sharp contrast to someone like Yuvan who is more successful with new comers. And his father, Ilayaraja, has an unprecedented record of hit movies with new comers. The irony is that Rahman's judgment in scripts is not that great; he can connect with his music but I don’t think he has the ability to judge what scripts will work and what will not. If Mani Ratnam, Aamir Khan, and Shankar move on at this point to new music directors, it will at least give Rahman a new bandwidth of newcomers to experiment with.

I am not disputing that Rahman has set a benchmark in the industry. However, I would prefer that Rahman try and experiment with more new comers and hone his instinct to connect with new scripts instead of circling back to those five top directors all the time.

The theatre owners in Madurai are an agitated lot these days, as the compensation package announced by Rajinikanth, producers Kavithalaya and Pyramid Saimira did not reach them as promised. Speaking to the media about this, Annamalai said the distributors in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Nellai, Kanyakumari and Salem did not get

the amount so far, while those including Coimbatore, Chengalpet, South and North Arcot have been paid. He added that there was no proper response either from Rajinikanth or Kavithalaya.

According to Annamalai, the affected theatre owners are planning an agitation to stress their demands. Meanwhile, sources close to Rajini and Kavithalaya insist that the payments will be made by Pyramid Saimira and they are awaiting the release of the settlement amount from them.

Anoushka who made waves with her sensuous number Mobila in Rendu with Madhavan shifted base from Kollywood to Tollywood. Her career in Andhra is said to be very satisfactory and now the girl will once again be seen on Tamil screen with Paruthi Veeran Karthi under Suraaj's direction with studio green producing the film.

As this 'yet to be titled' film is a remake of Vikramarkudu from Telugu, Anoushka who starred in the original as heroine is being roped in Tamil too. Industry grapevine reveals that Anoushka who is doing the role of Nayanthara in the Telugu version of Billa has charged a jaw dropping sum to wear a double piece swim suit in that film.
